What should I expect when I hire an attorney?

It depends. But keep in mind that when you hire a lawyer, they work for you. You can determine the expectations when you hire them. They will communicate to you clearly what they need from you to manage your case, and once you do that part, you can set the expectation from them. Remember, that lawyers will not be working on just your case, they are often working on dozens of other cases, and therefore the more involved you are in the progress the faster it can get resolved.
The bottom line, communicate your expectations, timeline, and preferences before you sign the contract and pay the retainer.
